SkyTemple is a ROM editor for the video game "Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky" (not official). It allows you to edit almost any aspect of the game, from the game's script scenes, to Pokémon data and Dungeons.

The editor is split into multiple sections which let you edit the various aspects of the game.

First launch
The first time you open SkyTemple it will show you two dialogs.

The first dialog asks you for your consent to collect user information whenever SkyTemple runs into an error. This helps us to fix issues with SkyTemple much easier, but it is fully optional. See the privacy policy for error reporting for information. You can change your preferences at a later time in the settings.

Afterwards you will presented with the SkyTemple main UI, where you can load a ROM to get started.

You will then be shown a second dialog, that introduces you to SkyTemple (welcome screen). It shows a brief introduction and may have linked you to this wiki. It also allows you to insert a "Created with SkyTemple" logo to the startup splash screen that shows when the game is started.

Loading a ROM
To load a ROM file, select the "Open" button in the top-left of the application. You can find a list of recently opened ROMs here or select "More Files" to browse for a ROM file.

Supported are all valid Nintendo DS ROM files (.nds files) that identify themselves as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. It can also open most ROM hacks of the game, unless the author of the hack has implemented measures that prevent SkyTemple from detecting it as a valid ROM of the game.

Menu options
On the top-right of the application you find various options.

* : Clicking this button opens the Script Engine Debugger to test the game and modify it's scripts.
* Reload icon: Clicking the reload icon will reload the current ROM, discarding all changes. This is useful if you edited the ROM in another tool.
* Question mark icon: This opens the SkyTemple Wiki page that is relevant to the section you are currently editing.
* "Save": Saves the changes you made to the ROM. This saves all files to the ROM that were modified in either the main SkyTemple application or in the Script Engine Debugger. In both applications, changed sections and files are marked with an asterisks (*). Saving can also be done with the keyboard shortcut <code>CTRL+S</code>.
* "...": Opens a menu with additional options
** "Save as...": Saves the ROM under a different file name. The editor will then also use this new file name the next time you hit "Save".
** "Show welcome screen...": Shows the welcome screen dialog again, see First launch.
** "Settings...": Opens the Settings dialog, which allows you to configure global settings for the application.
** "Open Image Converter...": Opens the Tilequant image converter. This converter allows you to convert any image in the formats needed by the game.
** "Open SpriteCollab Browser...": Opens the Browser, which allows you to download Pokémon portraits and sprites from the community.
** "Open config directory...": This opens the SkyTemple application configuration directory in your file browser. This directory also contains the log files SkyTemple generates, which can be useful if you encounter issues to report them.
** "About": Opens a dialog that shows you the authors of SkyTemple, the license and the version of SkyTemple you are currently running.

Sections
After opening a ROM in SkyTemple, the editor will show a list of sections on the left side of the application. You can open all entries in this list by double-clicking.

You can expand the sections to see additional entries, such as a list of Pokémon or Dungeons to edit. The sections themselves may also provide some general settings when double-clicked.

ROM Settings ("<name of ROM>.nds")
ROM Cartridge Data
This root section is the first section opened whenever you open a ROM. It lets you edit basic information about the game.
Patches
Patches Section
The Patches section allows you to apply bundled ASM patches that modify the game in substantial ways. It also allows you to load user-created ASM patches or your own and explains how to apply patches written in Rust or C.
Lists
Lists Section
The Lists section contains various lists and tables inside the game related to all sorts of things, such as starters, world map markers, menu configuration and IQ settings.

Text Strings
Text Strings
The Text Strings section allows editing all text that is not inside of scripts (script text is stored inside the scripts).

Script Scenes
Script Engine
Script Scenes are arrangements of NPCs, objects, performer (camera) and triggers on the overworld. This section lets you edit the layout and composition of these scenes, while the actual scenes are scripted and can be edited using the Script Engine Debugger.

Pokémon
Editing Pokémon
The Pokémon section lets you modify all data about each Pokémon in the game. Pokémon are grouped by female and male forms (even if they are genderless or only have one gender).

Items
Item Data
The Items section allows you to edit item properties and global item tables, such as the shop item tables. Dungeon item tables can be modified for each dungeon floor in the Dungeons section.

Moves
Move DataThe Moves section allows you to edit Pokémon move properties
Map Backgrounds
Map Background
Each script scene in the game has one or multiple Map Backgrounds (usually named in a similar way, but this does not necessarily have to be the case). These backgrounds are used for overworld locations, such as Treasure Town, but also cutscene images and the logos shown on startup.
Object Sprites
Object Sprite
Objects placed in script scenes can have sprites just like Pokémon. In this section you find a list of all object sprite files in the game and can edit them.
Backgrounds
Misc. Background
The Backgrounds section contains backgrounds used for special purposes, such as the main menu backgrounds.

Dungeons
Dungeon List
Mystery Dungeons are the main gameplay element of this game. In this section you can group and edit dungeons and their properties as well as modify the properties of each floor in a dungeon. Each floor can have unique generation properties and item, trap and Pokémon spawn lists.

Fixed Rooms
Fixed Room
Fixed Rooms are special dungeon rooms or floors used for treasure rooms, puzzle floors or boss fights. In this section you can edit their layout.
Dungeon Graphics
Dungeon Graphics
The graphics in dungeons are made out of tilesets. Fixed Rooms may even use a full image as a background. Additionally items and traps can spawn in dungeons which also have unique graphics. You can edit all of these graphics in the Dungeon Graphics section.

Misc. Graphics
Dungeon Graphics
The game has various other graphics for all kinds of purposes, which you can edit in the Misc. Graphics section.

Script Engine Debugger
Script Engine Debugger
By clicking the (bug) icon in the top bar of the editor, you can launch the SkyTemple Script Engine Debugger.

With this tool you can test your game inside a bundled emulator and modify the code of the game's script scene. While the Script Scenes section in the main UI lets you edit the layout of the scenes (such as NPC placements), the actual scripts that run these scenes can be edited here. These scenes are used almost everywhere in the game outside of the main menu, dungeons and most of the personality quiz and shop menus. They are used for cutscenes, NPC interaction all player-controlled overworld maps. The game runs them in the so-called "Ground Mode" using its Script Engine.

Project directory and sharing your game
When you open a ROM in SkyTemple, the app will create a directory next to the ROM file, it is named the same as the ROM file suffixed with ".skytemple". This directory can safely be deleted and is not needed to play the ROM, however it contains information that is very useful for editing the game. This includes the source code for all scripts you edited and macro files. If you delete the directory SkyTemple will decompile scripts again, which leaves them in a rather unreadable state and removes all comments you made.

To share the ROM Hack / mod you made, save the ROM in SkyTemple and create a patch file from your game based on a clean copy of the original game ROM. You don't need to share the project directory. Never share the ".nds" file itself, only patch files. See the FAQ for more information.

Reporting issues
If you encounter an issue with SkyTemple, such as an error dialog, please share the issue with us so we can improve SkyTemple.

You can report issues on our community Discord server or preferably on our GitHub repository. Please include as much information as you can about what caused the error and share error details if available.

You can also enable error telemetry. In that case SkyTemple will automatically send error reports to the developers.

The list of Starters contains all the possible player and partner Pokémon that can be assigned during the Personality Quiz. It is found under Lists -> Starters.

The Starter List
Below is a screenshot of an unedited Starter List. This list contains the list of player and partner Pokémon, each with a specific Personality and gender. Note that you must scroll down to see the full list.
At the top are the default starters, nicknames, and team name. This is the default team setup if the personality quiz is skipped and either: ProcessSpecial(PROCESS_SPECIAL_INIT_MAIN_TEAM_AFTER_QUIZ, 0, 0) is applied or the game is in Debug Mode. The Team Name is the default name shown in the name input when naming the team, regardless of if the actual default team is used or not.

You can also edit the Starting Level of both the player and partner Pokémon. It is Level 5 by default. Under that option is a list of 31 player and 20 partner Pokémon. Clicking on a Pokémon's name will allow you to edit the species and gender. Note that while each player Pokémon entry has a gender associated with it, this only depends on what the player selects as their gender in the Personality Quiz, not the gender of the entry. The Personality of each entry corresponds to the result of the Personality Quiz.

Limitations and Helpful Patches
With SkyTemple alone, the number of entries cannot be increased. Due to this, not every gender in the base game has the same Pokémon (some are exclusive to one gender). Additionally, without the SameTypePartner patch, the player Pokémon and partner Pokémon cannot be the same type. If all of the possible partner Pokémon are the same type as the player, this can cause game-breaking issues.

Here are some ASM Patches relevant to both the Starter List and the Personality Quiz:

* ChooseStarter: Adds an extra menu after the quiz, allowing you to manually choose a player Pokémon.
* SkipQuiz: Skips the personality test aside from the gender question. Requires the ChooseStarter patch.
* SameTypePartner: Allows the partner to be the same type as the player.

Supported are all valid Nintendo DS ROM files that identify themselves as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky in either the european or american version. The japanese version is not yet supported. You can also open most ROM hacks of said game, unless the author of the hack has implemented measures that prevent SkyTemple from detecting it as a valid ROM of the game.

Script |Scenes are arrangements of NPCs, objects, performer (camera) and triggers on the overworld.

A tileset can have three categories of tiles, where two are always walls and ground and one is either water, lava or void.

Dungeon Tile Exchange Format (DTEF)
DTEF is the easiest way to edit and exchange tilesets. More information about it and documentation can (for now) be found on its GitHub page.

Advanced Mode
Alternatively SkyTemple has an editor built-in for more advanced usage. It allows exporting and importing the raw chunks and tiles and manually editing the adjacency rules of dungeon tiles.
In the games what the player is presented as a Mystery Dungeon is actually a Dungeon Group which groups multiple dungeons into a single entity that the player can explore. When a dungeon is cleared, the game usually shows a script enter or acting scene, such as a rest room or pre-boss cutscene and then proceeds to the next dungeon in the group. Crucially the health of the player is not restored between dungeons in a dungeon group and the entire outing is based on the group.

In SkyTemple you can see dungeons grouped by dungeon groups and you can also re-assign dungeons to different groups. The name of the group as shown in the editor is always based on the first dungeon in the group. If a group only has one dungeon, the group is omitted for simplicity.

Groups have no IDs, the game only keeps tracks of dungeon IDs. In order to visit a dungeon group from script, use the ID of the first dungeon in it.

The DungeonInterrupt patch can be used as an alternative to splitting dungeons up via the group system. It allows for script scenes in between floors of a single dungeon.NavSkyTemple

Scenes are used to setup positions, triggers, objects and actors for enter scenes and acting scenes.

Scene Editor
----The Scene editor proviedes a few different options to edit scenes.

Adding things and changing backgrounds
----

This Bar found on the top of the scene screen allows you to (in order from left to right):

* Add Actors
* Add Objects
* Add Performers
* Add Triggers
* Change the Background (preview only!)
* Switch to the selected Background in the "Map Backgrounds" Tab

Side Tab Options
----On the right side, you have the option to open different tabs, which allow for easier viewing of settings or editing different parts.

Scene Tab:
This Tab is used for Sector and script setup.

Adding or Removing Sectors:
Sectors can be added in the menu using the "+" and "-" Buttons. They are usually used to allow for easy modifying of NPC placements and talk script assignment, due to them being selectively loaded by code in either the enter00.ssb script or an acting script.

Adding Scripts:
This is only relevant for enter scenes. Acting scenes need to have exactly one script assigned to them.

Scripts can be added using the "+" button in the scripts windows of the enter scene. When adding a script you are asked to enter a script number, which will then be placed after the word "enter". For example if you enter the number "9", the script will be called "enter09.ssb". Removing scripts with the "-" button is currently not implemented.

Map Tab:
Lists the enter00 scene and all acting scenes assigned to the script scene.

Actors Tab:
Lists all Actors and their assigned Sectors and Talk Scripts.

Objects Tab:
Lists all Objects and their assigned Sectors and Talk Scripts.

Performers Tab:
Lists all Performers Types and assigned Sectors

Triggers Tab:
Lists all Triggers assigned Sectors and Event scripts.

Top Tab Options
----On the top left of the scene editor, you can switch between the scene view and the events tab, which is used to setup Events for free roaming segments.

Assigning parameters to actors
----After an actor is placed in a scene, you can open a menu by clicking on the actor. There you have the options to:

* Delete the actor
* Set the actor Kind using a selection from the Actor List
* Assign a Sector the actor should be on
* Assign a Talkscript that gets executed when the NPC is being talked to (only useful for enter scenes!)
* Set a direction the actor should face

The SkyTemple Script Engine Debugger is an application bundled with SkyTemple that allows editing the game's Script Engine scripts. It has a builtin emulator to test changes made to the game in real time.
The Debugger can be opened from SkyTemple by clicking the -Icon from within the SkyTemple application. This will open a new window that is split into multiple sections.

Menu
At the top of the window is the menubar. This allows you to configure various options, such as emulator controls, script editor color scheme. It also allows you to access utilities such as the "Find & Replace" window.

Sidebar
The sidebar gives you access to various utility functions. By default it shows the "Script Browser" ("Scripts"). Other sections can be accessed with the navigation at the left of the window.

Scripts
The "Script Browser" shows you a directory tree of all scripts in the game. The scripts are associated to scenes and are structured in the same way. Double-clicking a script will open it in the "Script Editor".

Ground State
When the game is running in the emulator and is paused while the Script Engine is active, the "Ground Engine State" view shows a list of all open script files and which hanger they are loaded in. Additionally you can view loaded entities in the current scene. Double-clicking on a script file will open it. The entities in the scene are a combination of all entities from all active sectors of all loaded scenes.

Global Variables
While the game is running the "Global Variables" section shows all game variables. These can be manipulated in real time. They can also be saved and reloaded.

The game variables are the same used by the Script Engine, but they are also used by other parts of the game.

Local Variables
When the game is halted during debugging, the "Local Variables" shows the current values of local variables and macro variables.

State / Debugging
The "State / Debugging" view is split into two sections.

Debug Flags
In the "Debug Flags" section you can modify the game's builtin debug flags ("Debug Flags", "Debug Log Flags") as well as enable general debugging capabilities built into the Debugger ("General Debug").

General Debug
* Draw Entity Debug Overlay: If enabled the Debugger will highlight entities on the overworld in the emulator. This includes invisible entities, such as invisible objects and triggers.
* Enable Debugging Mode: This causes all debug branches in scripts (<code>if (debug) {...}</code>) to pass, enabling some debugging menus in the script engine, as well as custom debugging capabilities behind debug branches.
* Dungeons: Auto Next Floor: If checked and the player is in a dungeon the Debugger will automatically advance the game to the next dungeon floor whenever it's the player's turn.

Debug Flags
* Message Speed Up: Increases the text spped.
* Disable Screen Fade: Disables all screen fade animations.
* Disable Sound: Disables all sound effects and music.
* Disable Background Music: Disables music.
* Disable Sound Effects: Disables sound effects.
* Stage NPC Dummy: Sometimes replaces actors in scenes with placeholder Pokémon. This doesn't seem to actually work most of the time.
* Text Overflow Check: Does nothing.
* No cheat-check: Unknown.
* No plunge-check: Unknown.
* Dungeon Infinite Comeback: Unknown. Potentially removes the rescue limit?
* Enable Debug Menus: Does nothing.
* Override Dungeon Result: Shows a debug menu before dungeons that allows auto-completing or auto-failing a dungeon. Additionally enables a debug display in the personality quiz.

Debug Log Flags
All "Debug Log Flags" enable additional debugging information being written to the log.

Allocated Memory
The "Allocated Memory" section gives you information about allocated memory locations while the game is running and paused. You can dump allocated memory for debugging purposes.

Script Editor
The Script Editor allows you to edit the game's scripts. Instead of directly editing the low-level code, the Debugger will when a script is opened first decompile it into ExplorerScript, a high level scripting language for modifying the game's scripts. The toolbar at the top allows you to control debugging and jumping to the corresponding scene in SkyTemple's main window.

Debugging a Script
To debug a script, choose the line you want the debugger to halt at. Click the small area on the right side of the line number before the actual code starts. This will add a breakpoint, indicated by a red circle.

If you run the game in the emulator and the game gets to the selected line, the debugger will halt and you will be in debugging mode. You can now use the buttons at the top of the editor to advance the emulator line-by-line or resume normal operation until the next breakpoint is hit. You can also use the button on the very left to temporarily disable all breakpoints and run the game without debugging.

Auto Completion
Whenever you beging to type an operation name, a constant or a variable, a little window will open under your cursor and suggest auto-completions. This can help you to find what you need. The Debugger will also provide you with a list of parameters when you are inside of an operation call. If you select a Position Mark you will see a button in this window that allows you to open a visual editor for the mark.

Textbox Tool
By selecting "Textbox Preview Tool" your browser will open a new tab that leads to the textbox preview tool. This tool allows you to visualize textboxes and make it easier to tell how many characters can fit in each line. If you open the tool via the button in the editor, it will link to your SkyTemple instance: If you select a string in the text editor it will automatically transfer to the preview tool. This allows you to preview strings in real time.

Emulator
The right side of the debugger shows the emulator window and its controls.

The emulator allows you to test the game. Most changes you make through SkyTemple and the Debugger are applied in real-time, however note that every change you make will slightly corrupt the game (usually starting with the music). This means from time to time restarting the game will be neccesary, a savestate will not help.

Below the emulator you can control its state and save and restore savestates.

The game is controlled with your keyboard and mouse and/or any connected controller or joystick. Click on the emulator to catch keyboard controls.

Holding the "O" key will by default enable "boost mode". In "boost mode" most debugging functionality will stop to function and the game will run at a much higher speed.

To modify and view the default controls use the "Emulator" menu in the menu bar. You can also configure the firmware language here.

Log
The log at the bottom of the window shows you the game's logging output as well as events related to the Script Engine.

* Game Internal: Print the game's output log.
* Script Debug: Print the output of the script's <code>debug_Print*</code>operations.
* OpCodes: Print debugging information about opcodes processed by the script engine.
* Engine Events: Print whenever the debugger detects script and scene files being loaded and unloaded.

Every overworld Monster Sprite includes multiple animations, each with their own unique Animation ID. This ID can be found in the AnimData.xml file of the sprite (from either exporting the sprite or downloading the sprite from the PMD Sprite Repository).

In cutscenes, the animations can be called using the SetAnimation Opcode with a parameter from the SetAnimation table based on the Animation ID and desired animation settings.
These animations are specific to Explorers of Sky starter Pokémon.
Installing Plugins
To install Plugins, open SkyTemple and select "Open config directory..." from the hamburger menu. This will open the configuration directory. You can also navigate to the following folder manually:

* Linux without Flatpak: <code>~/.config/skytemple</code> (<code>$XDG_CONFIG_HOME</code> is used)
* Linux with Flatpak: <code>~/.var/app/org.skytemple.SkyTemple/config/skytemple</code>
* MacOS: <code>~/Library/Preferences/skytemple</code>
* Windows: <code>C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\skytemple</code>

Within that directory you will find a directory "plugins". Place the downloaded plugin "whl" file within that directory and restart SkyTemple.

List of Plugins
A list of plugins can be found in :Category:Plugin.

Developing Plugins
If you want to develop your own plugin, you can find the instructions in the <code>docs/plugin_dev.rst</code> file in the SkyTemple repository.
